How to measure your kitchen

Use inches. Draw the room from above and label the dimensions clearly. A hand-drawn sketch is welcome.

What to mark on your drawing

  • Every wall's total lengthMeasure each full wall, then the smaller sections.
  • Windows, doors & openingsInclude width, height, floor-to-sill height and distance from the nearest corner.
  • Appliance sizes & locationsMark the refrigerator, dishwasher and range or cooktop. Include actual dimensions or model numbers.
  • Ceiling height & obstructionsLabel soffits, beams, columns and any changes in height.
  • Sink & utility locationsMark the plumbing center, water, gas, power and vents.
  • Island or peninsulaInclude the size, location and surrounding walkway clearances.
